Simple Tips for Workspace Efficiency

Posted in Articles on December 9th, 2012 | No Comments

I use the Adobe’s most popular design application InDesign for working in my designs. I have to frequently use other applications Photoshop and Illustrator for illustrations and pictures to use in my design. Using all of them at the same time with tools and pallets makes my work space congested.
It feels like trying to paint with both hands tied. I think most of new designers like me are also facing same problem.

Here are some simple but very useful tips that I have found in web, to increase the efficiency of digital working area.

Screen Resolution:

Run your computer at the highest possible resolution setting for your particular monitor. Although it will make the items and fonts appear small in your screen (in some case), this will gives you more space area to move objects within your design.

Customizing workspace

In adobe application you can see the WORKSPACE option in windows menu. You can use it to save your preferred layout in each application. This will sort out your necessary toolbars and set it on and off according to your setting. Pressing TAB key will also toggle the toolbars on and off. Using the shortcut keys also keep your workspace tidy.

Monitor size

Monitor size is definitely gonna effect in your workspace. Large monitor will give you more free area. Widescreen monitor gives you extra width to place the necessary tools. Main artboard gets plenty of space to handle the messy artworks. But I would like to use multiple monitors. Two monitors are enough for me.

Using multiple monitors gives plenty of workspace. You can place you artboard in one monitor and use another for showcasing the tools and reference images or resources. Particularly in web designing it’s very useful for displaying live webpage and codes at the same time without minimizing the application.

1280 x 1024 dual monitors

The biggest advantage for dual monitor user is an increase in productivity. Number of studies has attempted to calculate the change in productivity from using multiple monitors. According to a study done by the Jon Peddie Research, using multiple displays increases an average of 42% of productivity.
