Create a Photo-Realistic Candle in Photoshop

There are couple of methods for creating Photo-realistic image in Photoshop. Most of them are complex and advanced. But in this tutorial, you will learn to make a Photo-Realistic Candle using very simple and easy techniques. You will only need to use basic tools and some effects.  Follow my step by step Photoshop tutorial to learn how to create a Photo-realistic Candle of your own. So, let’s start!

This is how our finished image is going to look like. A photo-realistic candle in Photoshop. It looks like it requires a lot of tedious work, but it’s actually quite simple.

Begin by creating a new file of 1000 X 1200 px size and name it Candle.

Press D to set a default color and fill the new document with foreground color pressing Alt + Backspace, which should be black.

Now, get a new layer by pressing Ctrl or Cmd + Shift + N and name it Wax Body. Then press M to select the RECTANGULAR MARQUEE TOOL and make a vertical rectangle shaped selection as shown above.

Press G to get the GRADIENT TOOL selected. Make sure Linear Gradient is selected in the option bar. Get a GRADIENT EDITOR and create four color Gradient of color #ff9393, #ff0000, #cd0000, #780000.

Apply selected Gradient in the selection made in previous step with lighter color on the top as shown in the above image. Press Ctrl or Cmd + D to deselect the selection.

Select ERASER TOOL by pressing E with hardness 100 and erase the Wax Body at the top to give it kind of molten look.

For the bottom part select PEN TOOL by pressing P. Draw a shape as shown above.

Right click the mouse with Pen Tool Selected. Click the MAKE SELECTION option and hit OK to get selection and press Delete. It will give a cylindrical look to candle.

Select BLUR TOOL and move around the edges to smooth it.

Now it’s time to make flame for the candle. Select the ELLIPTICAL MARQUEE TOOL and draw an oval shape in a new layer named White Flame.

Fill it with White color and deselect the selection. Press Ctrl or Cmd + T and right click to select the WARP option. Adjust it to make a flame as shown above.

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Outer Glow to give a glow effect. Use #b48442 for glow color and adjust spread and size to get satisfying result.

Now, holding Ctrl or Cmd click in the THUMBNAIL LAYER of White Flame to get selection.

Fill it with the color #e5b00d in New Layer named Yellow Flame above White Flame Layer.

Delete unnecessary part using ERASER TOOL with 0% Hardness to get the result shown above.

Get another selection using White Flame Layer and fill it with color #524f7c in the New Layer named Blue Flame above Yellow Flame Layer. Use ERASER TOOL to get the similar result as shown above. Set the opacity of Blue Flame layer to 90%.

Create a new layer named Glow above the Blue Flame Layer and create oval shape using ELLIPTICAL MARQUEE TOOL and fill with color #eda43f. Press Ctrl or Cmd + D to deselect it.

Change the Blending Mode of this layer to Lighter Color with 90% opacity. Apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur on it and set radius to give it a nice glow.

Create new layer named Linen Wick above the Blue Flame layer, Set foreground color to #242642. Using Soft Brush with 25% opacity in option bar, draw Linen Wick and set its layer opacity to 85%.

Now it’s time to give the Wax Body shadow and highlights. Press Ctrl or Cmd + Shift + N with Wax Body Layer Selected for creating new layer and name it Shadow. Check the option USE PREVIOUS LAYER TO CREATE CLIPPING MASK and set blending mode to multiply with opacity 80%. Press OK.

Set the foreground color to Black. Selecting the Shadow Layer, paint shadow as outline using Soft Brush with 20% opacity.

Again selecting Wax Body layer create a new layer. Make sure to Check the option Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask and set blending mode to Overlay. Press OK.

Pick the light color from the Wax Body using Color Picker to set it as Foreground Color. Paint highlights as outline as shown in the image above using the Soft Brush with opacity 80%.

Create new layer above the Shadow Layer and name it Highlight. Make a vertical selection using RECTANGULAR MARQUEE TOOL and fill it with White Color. Press Ctrl or Cmd + D to deselect the selection.

Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and adjust its radius to give a shining look in the candle. Set it’s opacity to 70%.

After the last step this is how your Photo-realistic Candle is gona look. It’s exciting to see how just a few simple tools and techniques can be applied to make a Photo-realistic image. Enjoy.
