Paras Khadka Text Potrait

We have seen the amazing typographic portraits made by excellent artists all over the world featuring eminent personalities and famous stars. If you have ever wondered how to create one for yourself, this tutorial is for you. In this tutorial we’re going to create a typographic portrait of Captain Cool Paras Khadka in Photoshop. We will bend and deform a long passage of text about the Captain using Displace filter and some Blend Modes to achieve the effect. The whole process is super easy but the real trick is in placing and arranging the text, which my take some time.

Above image is the final portrait that we are going to create. Grayscale image looks great for this effect. Let’s start.

Open your chosen image in Photoshop. I’m using Paras Khadka’s photo found in espncricinfo.com for this tutorial. Its size is 900px X 1080px.

Go to Image>Adjustment>Desaturate or press Ctrl or Cmd + Shift + U to convert it into grayscale. Then increase its contrast by darkening its shadow using BURN TOOL. Adjust its contrast by using Levels Option.

Black background looks better for this effect. So I painted it with black color using Brush Tool.

Now we need a duplicate image. Go to Image>Duplicate and name it Displace.

Add a Gaussian Blur in the duplicate image from the Filter Menu. Adjust Radius according to your need to get similar blur as in above image. Save it in PSD format to use it later for displace effect.

Now go back to original image. Create a new layer and name it Black. Fill it with black color.

It’s time to add text. Click on the TYPE TOOL or press T and create a text box. Paste in your text and avoid any line breaks. Make some keywords much bigger and bold. I highlight some words like Nepal, Paras Khadka, Cricket, Captain Cool, Twenty20. Play with the texts and place them to cover the image.

Don’t place highlighted keywords in the areas like eyes, nose or lips. While using Displace effect it may cause some unwanted result. You can check it placing the main image above the text and reducing the opacity.

Add Drop Shadow effect to each layer of text. Make a group of text layers and name it Text. Make a copy of it. Convert both of them into Smart Object separately.

Select the layer named Text and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the Radius. Press Ctrl or Cmd + T to get Transform Tool and slightly reduce its size. Double click the Smart Object icon and change the position of some text box. It will give some depth to the text.

Convert both Smart Object layers into single Smart Object named Main Text and go to Filter>Distort>Displace. Use 8 for the Horizontal and Vertical Scale, use Tile for Displacement Map and Repeat Edge Pixels for the Undefined Areas and click OK. It will ask to choose a file and navigate to the displace.psd file we saved earlier.

Select the layer named Main Image and press Ctrl or Cmd + Shift + ] to bring it on top, then change the blend Mode of the photo layer to Light Burn.

Paras Khadka Text Potrait

Selecting the Main Image layer go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels and adjust its contrast until you get satisfying result.

By double clicking the Smart Object icon in the Main Text layer you can still edit the placement and the size of the text to get the best result. Keep on experimenting with font types and contrast of the image.
