vector pencil

In this tutorial, I’ll explain how to create a vector pencil. This is for intermediate level designers. I tried my best to explain clearly. I focused mainly on using shortcuts because it can improve our work efficiency. Hope you will like it. Any corrections are welcome. This is what you are going to create.

vector pencil

Begin with taking a new document of A4 size or any size of your choice.

vector pencil icon

Start by making a vertical rectangle using RECTANGLE TOOL. Make another two rectangles with the width of one third of the first one.

vector pencil icon

Align them above the first rectangle on each side as shown above using ALIGN PANEL.

vector pencil icon

Head up to the GREDIENT PANEL and fill with a vertical gradient ranging from yellow to an orange. Similarly, fill gradient in other small rectangles. One with the light yellow and light orange. The next one should be filled with darker yellow and orange. This will give a warm and nice shadow effect.

vector pencil icon

Now time to add eraser to our pencil. First we will add a holder. Copy the very first rectangle and press CTRL or CMD + F to paste it in front. Then reduce its height just enough to make a band around the pencil. Hit CTRL or CMD + SHIFT + } to bring it on the top and make it light blue in color. Press SHIFT + C to get CONVERT ANCHOR POINT TOOL. Use it to bend that blue rectangle as shown above.

vector pencil icon

Using PEN TOOL and CONVERT ANCHOR POINT TOOL make similar objects as shown above to give shine and shadow effect.

vector pencil icon

Create another rectangle with rounded corners using ROUNDED RECTANGEL TOOL. Its width should be same as that of very first rectangle. Fill it with light pink color. It will be our eraser. Selecting the pink rectangle press CTRL or CMD + SHIFT + { to send it back.

vector pencil icon

Add an anchor point at the top center of the pink rounded rectangle. Move it little bit up dragging it up by DIRECT SELECTION TOOL. Press SHIFT + C to get convert anchor point tool. Click on the point and drag horizontally holding SHIFT key to make a curve line. This will give an eraser a round look.

vector pencil icon

To get perfect roundness, adjust the anchor points indicated by a red mark in above picture. Select the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL and move them up a bit and use CONVERT ANCHOR POINT TOOL to give a perfect shape.

vector pencil icon

Selecting the pink rectangle press CTRL or CMD + C and CTRL or CMD + F to copy and paste it in front of the first one. Fill it with dark pink color. Use SELECTION TOOL to scale it down.

vector pencil icon

Draw a rectangle using RECTANGLE TOOL to cover two-third of the dark pink object. Select the rectangle and dark pink object and go to the PATHFINDER PANEL. Click DIVIDE button to get the objects divided. Delete the intersected and overlapping part of rectangle.

vector pencil icon

Selecting the remaining part press CTRL or CMD + { for a couple of times until it hides under the blue holder. It will give a nice shadow effect for the eraser.

vector pencil icon

Now head down at the bottom of the pencil. Selecting the very first rectangle press CTRL or CMD + C and CTRL or CMD + F to copy and paste the rectangle in front. Select the SELECTION TOOL. Click top center small box and drag it down as shown above.

vector pencil icon

Fill it with nice brown color. Selecting the brown shape press CTRL or CMD + SHIFT + } to move it at the top.

vector pencil icon

Select the ADD ANCHOR POINT TOOL and add an anchor point at the center of the bottom line. Now select the DELETE ANCHOR POINT TOOL and click on the points indicated with red circles in the above picture to delete them.

vector pencil icon

You will get a perfect triangle for the sharp tip.

vector pencil icon

Using ADD ANCHOR POINT TOOL add two more points on the top of brown rectangle. Add them just above the lining of the pencil and using DIRECT SELECTION TOOL drag them up a bit. Select CONVERT ANCHOR POINT TOOL. Click and drag the point and adjust the handles to make swell on them.

vector pencil icon

Selecting the triangle, press CTRL or CMD + C and CTRL or CMD + F to copy and paste the triangle in front of the first one. Fill it with light brown color. Select the DELETE ANCHOR POINT TOOL and delete the two anchor points as shown above.

vector pencil icon

vector pencil icon

Now select CONVERT ANCHOR POINT TOOL and click on the handle to adjust the corner. You will get a light brown cone.

vector pencil icon

Go and select the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL and drag top two anchor points of the cone close to each other and little bit down as show above.

vector pencil icon

Repeat the same process again to get another cone for the right side and fill it with dark brown.

vector pencil icon

Selecting the very first brown triangle press CTRL or CMD + C and CTRL or CMD + F to copy and paste one more triangle. Bring it at front by pressing CTRL or CMD + SHIFT + }. Fill it with black color. This will be lead of the pencil.

vector pencil icon

Using ADD ANCHOR POINT TOOL add two anchor points side by side as shown above.

vector pencil icon

Delete other anchor points on the top by using DELETE ANCHOR POINT TOOL. (Note: you can use DIVIDE option of  PATHFINDER PANEL just like we have done to get eraser shadow above.)

vector pencil icon

Adjust the handles by CONVERT ANCHOR POINT TOOL to give a little swell on the top of the black triangle.

vector pencil icon

Select the light brown cone and black cone and go to the PATHFINDER panel and click on DIVIDE.

vector pencil icon

Select the intersected part and fill it with darker brown color.

vector pencil icon

Select all the parts and press CTRL or CMD + G to group them together. We have finished the pencil part. To add shadow and lining draw a shape as shown above and use gradient color.

vector pencil icon

Rotate the pencil and arrange with shadow and lining and you will get nice and cute vector pencil icon just like above.

Hope you have enjoyed this tutorial.
