How to create Judge Dredd Badge

Judge Dredd remake is one of the biggest movies, this tutorial is obviously inspired by it. Actually first I saw this batch in blog.spoongraphics.co.uk, which is the inspiration for this blog itself. Chris spooner is the man behind the original tutorial. Here is the step by step guide to create an awesome and different judge’s badge design with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. We’ll use Illustrator to create the basic artwork and later we’ll move on to Photoshop for coloring and texturing.

How to create Judge Dredd Badge

The above image is the final show piece of the Judge Dredd badge that we’ll be creating. You can see the different pieces which are created in Illustrator using pen and pathfinder tools. Then for texturing and distressed metal effect Photoshop is used.

How to create Judge Dredd Badge

First we’ll need an original photo as a reference. This will be our base for the design. You can search in Google Images for “Judge Dredd badge” and find plenty of images. You can choose anyone of them for the reference. Place the image into Illustrator and reduce its opacity then press CTRL or CMD + 2 to lock it down.

Draw a shield shape using PEN TOOL. Use CONVERT ANCHOR POINT TOOL and DIRECT SELECTION TOOL to place it in the right position.

To maintain its proportion we will cut out one half using SCISSORS TOOL and COPY/PASTE the remaining half. To reflect it go to Object > Transform > Reflect.

Then join the two open points together by pressing the shortcut CTRL or CMD + J to form a single close path object. If you face problem in alignment then you can use SMART GUIDES. Press CTRL or CMD + U to activate it.

Select the outline and go to Object > Path > Offset Path and enter the appropriate value to create a parallel inner shapes matching the original image. Repeat same process to create multiple objects.

Trace out the outline of the eagle head from the reference image. Use PEN TOOL and CONVERT ANCHOR POINT TOOL to get similar shape. Fill it with white color to hide the interesting lines. Using Smart Guides will help you to trace exactly to the badge outline.

Now begin to fill the inner details of the badge. Overlap the duplicate of the innermost shield shape and DIVIDE one from the other using PATHFINDER to create strips.

Use STAR TOOL to create stars for the badge. Place them in the perfect position to align them perfectly.

Draw a rectangle and rotate it to match the angle of the centre strip of the badge. Overlap all the diagonal lines that have already been drawn. Make sure the angle is exactly the same to that of the reference image.

How to create Judege Dredd Badge

Copy and paste the rectangle exactly on its top and use it to trim all the elements and split the badge in two regions using PATHFINDER.

Do some more exercise to get the shape like above. But make sure that you have removed any unnecessary lines that may create during trimming.

Now, head down at bottom. Use the PEN TOOL for tracing the shapes on the bottom edge of the badge design. Make sure to keep some space between each object and extend the top and bottom edges so they can be trimmed exactly to size with some groove between them. Just like the reference image.

Now copy the inner most shield shape and the outer most one and paste them exactly at their top and use them to trim using PATHFINDER.

Repeat the same process for other details as well. Move objects forward and backward to get the perfect overlapping. Make sure that all the details are copied and aligned in your artwork. Clear all other unnecessary outlines. Press CTRL or CMD + Y to switch in outline mode. This will give you clear outline picture of your batch.

You can see that your design has sharp corners. To give the design a perfect natural shape add around 1 mm of round corners. Go to EFFECT menu and click in STYLIZE. Select ROUND CORNERS… to get a dialogue box. You can experiment with the corner radius. Choose the right one for yourself.

After using ROUND CORNERS effect you can notice that some of the curves are displaced from its original path. To get them back you can add an anchor point on each curve. Add more points to get perfect curve.

Type some text in the centre strip. Here ONRAMP font is used. Use SHARE TOOL to match the angle of the strip.

How to create Judege Dredd Badge

Selecting the text, go to the TYPE menu and select CREATE OUTLINES or press CTRL or CMD + SHIFT + O to convert the text to outlines. Fill it with white color and keep its stroke black or selecting the expanded text object press D to get the default color filled.

After all the above process you should have something like the image above. It’s complete outline of our Dredd badge. Now’s lets switch over to PHOTOSHOP!

Copy the artwork from the Illustrator and paste it into Photoshop and scale it to size of your choice.

Now using MAGIC WAND TOOL select a shape, and then fill this area on a new layer.

How to create Judege Dredd Badge

Add some styles on it. Open up the LAYER STYLE option and select gradient overlay with the golden tones. Adjust the color packets to achieve a shiny effect.

Add DROP SHADOW to the shape with black color and change its blending mode into LINEAR BURN. Adjust its size to get perfect shadow. I have used around 30 px.

Add an INNER GLOW effect with a default yellow. Change its blending mode into OVERLAY. Reduce opacity and adjust its size to get highlighting tones.

At last add a thin 2px STROKE EFFECT and set it to gradient. Use same gradient color as the main overlay.

Click on the same layer pressing CTRL or CMD key to get selection around it. Fill it with grey in the new layer. Do not remove its selection. Head to FILTER menu and move down to select NOISE. Choose ADD NOISE and increase the amount to fill the area with heavy grain.

how to create judege dredd badge

Now go to FILTER menu again and head down for BLUR. Select MOTION BLUR and adjust the angle to vertical. Increase the distance to create a brushed metal effect.

how to create judege dredd badge

To get golden effect change its blending mode into COLOR BURN. See how it interact with the colours of the layer below.

Keep on repeating these two processes for all other details of the badge. You can make an ACTION for it. While using layer styles don’t forget to adjust the angle of the gradient to avoid uniformity.

how to create judege dredd badge

Now select all the golden area and create a new layer. Fill it with grey. Use ADD NOISE filter to add grains on it and leave it with blending mode to COLOR BURN and opacity  at 40%.

how to create judege dredd badge

Get a rust texture from here and place it over the design. Trim it down to the previous selection and DESATURATE it and change its blending mode to SOFT LIGHT.

how to create judege dredd badge

After finishing all the golden part now it’s time to select the remaining areas. This will be the background of the badge. Fill them with darker grey-brown.

how to create judege dredd badge

Give some INNER SHADOW EFFECT to these darker areas using black color. Set its size of around 20px or adjust it as your need. Use different setting for the narrow grooves separately.

how to create judege dredd badge

Download a concrete texture and paste it into the document. Using the selection of the darker areas, trim the texture into appropriate size.

how to create judege dredd badge

Turn this layer’s blending mode into COLOR BURN. This quick addition of texture really bring the badge to life.

how to create judege dredd badge

Look out for some other texture to give a background. Play with shadow and some grunch effect and do some justice! This leaves our super cool Judge Dredd inspired badge design complete.
